The human element: people in pictures

If you’ve got an idea for some photography, and want to talk about how they can be used most effectively, then give me a call and I’ll share my graphic design, photography and advertising skills and knowledge with you.

Do the public know who you are, and who your staff are? Images with integrity can’t be ignored!

Smile Dental, now known as Cameron & Co, came to me with needing a couple of staff headshots…This turned into a full photo campaign, which was amazing, interesting, and had a far greater effect than the original request would have resulted in.

Sarah said she wanted a few pictures of staff, so people (the public) would know what they look like and feel comfortable with them-because dentists can be scary. I could see underneath her original request how she wanted to share what her staff were like behind the dental mask, (real people doing real, everyday things). Sarah wanted to combine a portrait with the tag-line “what makes you smile?” sharing their quote of what makes those staff smile, so clients and people could get to know the staff and feel more welcome in the clinic. I said it may feel a little sterile having pictures in the office, so perhaps we should actually take photos of the staff DOING what makes them smile, I said it would be a bigger investment of work and time but I believed the visuals would have a far greater impact on viewers and locals getting to know the staff and what they love and what makes them smile - because people will relate and understand the people more, and hence feel more connected to those people…images with integrity can’t be ignored!

Sarah agreed to go ahead with this and see how the shoot would turn out. So we did! and wow! several shoots later, and lots of different location shoots…We came up with a great selection of advertising material for the following months, maybe 12 or 18 months at least…People horse riding, baking, beach sitting, castle hill walking, car driving, master chef-ing, coffee shop stopping, gardening and BBQ-ing…

While I was taking photos I was thinking of the different layout uses for Rilla, the German based, Australian designer. When I take photos, I’m always thinking of the graphic design, post shoot, and how the image can be utilised in multiple ways, on Facebook as a panoramic cover shot, on a business card, flyers, landscape and portrait page advertisements.this was so interesting, meeting the staff week by week, one by one, getting to know them a little more, and they also felt so relaxed- well I am sure they felt more relaxed, having their photos taken, doing what they love, rather than an office desk, studio lights kind of shoot…
